VAT invoicing in the UAE: a practical checklist
UAE VAT is charged at 5%. This checklist covers what most businesses handle every week. It is general information, not tax advice: the FTA publishes the binding rules.
Before you issue invoices
Businesses whose taxable supplies pass the registration threshold must register for VAT, and others may register voluntarily. The FTA publishes the current threshold and the registration steps.
What a tax invoice usually carries
Confirm the exact list with the FTA. In general:
- The words "Tax Invoice" and a unique, sequential invoice number.
- Date of issue and date of supply where it differs.
- Supplier and customer names, addresses and Tax Registration Numbers.
- A description, quantity and unit price for each line.
- The VAT rate and the VAT amount in dirhams, plus the total.
Corrections and records
Correct a wrong or returned sale with a credit note that refers to the original invoice, instead of editing the invoice. Keep invoices, credit notes and supporting documents in an organised way for the period the FTA requires.
