VAT invoicing in Bahrain: a checklist

What a VAT invoice normally shows

As published commentary describes it, a VAT invoice normally carries the items below. The NBR publishes the exact list, so check it before you rely on this one.

• A sequential invoice number and the date
• The supplier's name, address and VAT registration number
• The customer's name and address (and their number where they have one)
• A description of what was supplied, with quantities and prices
• The net amount, the VAT rate and the VAT amount, in dinars

Credit notes, not edits

Correct a wrong or returned sale with a credit note that refers to the original invoice, with the VAT on the credit following the VAT on the sale. Never edit an invoice that has gone to the customer: the trail you leave is what your VAT summary and any later question rely on.

Three decimals and rounding

Dinars have three decimals, and VAT added line by line can differ from VAT worked out on the invoice total by a fils or two. Agree one method with your accountant and make sure your software applies it every time. Our free VAT rounding checker shows the difference on a real invoice.
